The 1980s were a decade of romantic friendship films for the Hindi screen. These films portray relationships between men and women who are close friends, but who never become romantically involved. These films often explore themes of love and friendship, and they often end with the two main characters realizing that they are better off as friends than as anything else.
Some of the most popular romantic friendship films of the 1980s include Dil Chahta Hai, Maine Pyar Kiya, and Saagar. These films are still remembered fondly by many, and they continue to influence the way that Hindi films are made today.
This year, many films focused on the theme of friendship. Shaan, Ram Balaram, Qurbani, and Dostana all featured strong friendships between the main characters. Feroze Khan and Vinod Khanna were particularly popular in these films, and their friendship was one of the highlights of the year.
Shatrughan Sinha and Amitabh Bachchan's friendship in Dostana was also well-received, as was Shashi Kapoor's friendship with Amitabh in Shaan. Dharmendra and Amitabh's friendship in Ram Balaram was also praised. Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, and Vinod Mehra's friendship in The Burning Train was also an important film this year.
This year also featured some strong performances by female actors. Hema Malini was praised for her work in Ek Baar Kaho, while Parveen Babi was praised for her work in Amar Akbar Anthony. Zeenat Aman was also praised for her work in Don, and she would go on to have a very successful career in the coming years.
This year also saw the release of several notable films from the South Indian film industry. Apoorva Raagangal, 16 Vayathinile, and Thamizhaga also released this year and were well-received by audiences.
The year 1980 was no less important for Hindi cinema. Feroze Khan's FK International banner got a run for its money this year thanks to Qurbani. Exuberant displays of wealth, expensive car wrecks, hi-tech music, cinematography, spicy cinema under English influence, bombardment of romantic scenes with beautiful heroines, quality dialogues were all there in Feroze's films.
Qurbani had all of that and more. Former Miss Asia Pacific Parveen Babi's performance was hailed as her best yet.
But who understood Hindi better than Ranjeet himself, albeit with a bit of a Punjabi flavour of course? Ranjeet surprised everyone when he hummed the song In Aankhon Ki Masti from Umrao Jaan. Who would've thought Ranjeet could sing as well?
And currently Raja Hindustani is showcasing a cruel demonstration of heroism but still Betab (in Raaj Tilak with Dilip Kumar) will always have its place and impact among audiences.
Compared to that, younger brother Sanjay was doing emotionally soft films like Mela, Dosti. Feroze was not like that. He had his own style. Seventies belonged to Rajesh Khanna. But Firoz started the 80s with a bang and surpassed everyone.
Feroze, dressed as a cowboy dressed in leather boots and leather jacket, wearing a top hat, leather boots and a leather jacket, was not interested in horse racing as a superstar. After self-produced films in the 70s, he refrained from starring in his own films in the 80s. He only appeared in his younger brother Firoz Nadiadwala's productions.
Rajesh Khanna
When I did a survey at Filmfare some time ago, who will be the No.1 actor in 2022, every single person thought it would be Aamir Khan. But I think it will be Salman Khan. What people do not realize is that Aamir is called Insaaf ka ek Tarazu but Salman does more insaan per film. Aamir does a film for himself; he has a country to promote. Salman does a film for himself, and I think he is the superstar of modern times. He creates a fevered pitch around his release and has figured out how to get us to pay to see him and that is why he will rule the box office.
Saif Ali Khan
Saif is the first superstar, who was able to reform and change. Saif is someone with so much subtlety, who became a hyperactive superstar. Saif’s first superhit film was Dil Ch ahta Hai and later films like Kal Ho Na Ho, Omkara and Parineeta made him a superstar. Saif has talked openly about nepotism, social media trolls and other things. During the #Metoo movement Saif is one of those actors who supported the movement and raised a voice. We need more actors like that!
In the eighties, while making Qurbani, he had cast the handsome Vinod Khanna in it. Vinod Khanna's 1971 Mere Apne was the most handsome of the 10 years from 1971 to the early eighties. But with Zeenat Feroze Khan as the heroine, Hum Tumhe Fante Hai Aise, there was nothing left of the humor behind the song.
It was a dosti film about sacrificing love and life for friendship. In one scene in Qurbani, Feroze Khan smashes the car of wealthy Amrish Puri and loses a bet of four annas with him. In order to make this event effective, Feroze allegedly smashed a brand new white Mercedes car.
J Omprakash's Asha was released in the same year. It was written by Marathi writer, literary, storyteller Ram Kelkar. Asha's plot is based on moral values, possibility of human birth and death and feminism. Jitendra, Rina Roy, Rameshwari were casted. Music by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyrics by Anand Bakshi.
Girish Karnad also played an important role in Asha. Karnad was a big name on the stage at that time, while Jitendra was a popular actor on the Hindi screen. In this movie, Jaane Hum Sadak Ke Loge Se Yeh Duniya Wale Kyun Jalte Hai….The then child actor and now superstar Hrithik Roshan also featured in this song along with Jeetendra. Asha, a family plot, did well at the box office.
It was in 1980 that Vijay Anand made a multi-starrer big budget Ram Balaram. Big actors like Dharmendra, Amitabh, Zeenat, Rekha, Prem Chopra, Amjad Khan, Ajith were in it. Ram Balaram did well, but compared to Vijay Anand's other films, Ram Balaram did not achieve the expected success. Ram Balaram was Dharmendra and Amitabh's third film together.
There was a plot of friendship between two heroes. In this year, Amitabh also became friends with Shatrughan Sinha. The movie was Dostana…Directed by Raj Khosla and the story screenplay by Salim-Javed was for Dostana. Dostana had all the hot formula of action, emotion, drama. Because of the romantic beauty Zeenat creates a gap in the friendship between Amit and the enemy.
He is taken advantage of by Prem Chopra and his villainous circle of friends. Eventually misunderstandings are cleared up. In Dosti Ke Liye Pyaar Ki Qurbani, the heroes realize just in time and Dostana is re-energized and Prem Chopra and his circle of friends Amrish Puri, Sudhir are invited by both friends.
1980 was truly the year of two heroes. G.P. Sippy took Salim Javed with him and took Shaan from Ramesh Sippy after Sholay. Whelan in Sholay was a traditional rural bandit. Whereas Whelan Shakal in Shaan was extremely high-tech.
Similar to today's Koi Mil Gaya or Star Trek in Hollywood, Shaan's storyline was influenced. Jackal played by Kulbhushan Kharbanda was not scary enough. But cinemascope Shan RD made in Fuji color. Despite Burman's music and Amitabh, Shashi and Shatrughan at the box office, the multi-starrer Shaan could not maintain enough of the superhit tradition of Sippy films.
In the same year, BR Chopra's Yash Raj's The Burning Train hit the screens. It also had a multi star cast like Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Vinod Khanna, Vinod Mehra, Danny Denzoppa, Hema Malini, Parveen Babi, Neetu Singh. The Burning Train was the subject of the hours-long plot of saving the lives of passengers on a burning train. Compared to the limited sound effects and cinematography of that time, this movie is still as thrilling as it is today.
Dasari Rao had earlier made Jyoti Bane Jwala alongside Jitendra, Moushmi Chatterjee, Sarika, Vinod Mehra and Waheeda Rehman. It was a revenge film for torture. An important film based on the story of Arabian Nights, Alibaba Aur Chalis Chor, came out this year. That's Alibaba's magic cave, the magic of this movie took the theater by storm and the cave was opened at the box office for production. The last important film released this year was Subhash Ghai's Karr...
Guitarist Gorakh Sharma played the guitar tune R before the song Ik Hasina Thi on the shooting sets. D. At the behest of Burman, it was played at the right time. As Sharma played this tune, Panchamani used it in the same way in Karj. Rishi Kapoor's Karj became a superhit after which a wave of reincarnation love films started hitting the Hindi screen.
